How to Link to a Website
If you want to know how to link to a website, you’ll be happy to hear it’s a lot easier than you might expect. Depending on where you’re linking from - whether it’s from your own website or a forum post etc. - and what tools are available within that platform - it will either be a case of selecting some text and clicking on a button, or copying and pasting some simple HTML code.
How to link to a website from your own website:
1. Copy and paste the URL (website address) of the webpage you want to link to, into a notepad document.
2. Log into your website editor and type the text you want to make clickable. For example, if you want to link to a website about free tables you could type “Get your free table” or “Click here for a free table”.
3. Select the text you’ve just typed and find the link button in the tool bar in the editing window. It usually looks like a chain link, or a little picture of the earth with a chain link. If in doubt, just hover your mouse over each button until you find the one that says “Insert link”.
4. Copy and paste the URL from your notepad to the field in the box that pops up, and click “Ok” or “Save”.
That’s it. Now, if your website editor doesn’t have an “insert link” button you’ll need to use HTML to link to a website. The quickest way to do this is to search online for “free online HTML editor” - which will have the button mentioned above. So you’d follow the above steps, and then copy and paste the HTML into your website HTML editor.
How to link to a website from a forum
The steps are pretty much the same as above, except that some forums may not allow links within posts. In this case you’re usually allowed to put a link in your signature file. You’ll find this in different places in different forums, but there will usually be a member control panel of some kind. In signature files you generally need to use HTML as not many forums offer the button tools for these links. Using the HTML above should work.
Test your link
Very importantly, now that you know how to link to a website, once you’ve created the link make sure you test it first, before publishing it. Make sure it’s working correctly by clicking on it and checking that it goes to the correct site and not an error page. One more piece of advice: always copy and paste where possible - rather than typing - it helps to keep errors to a minimum. Enjoy!
