Should I Be Participating in Social Bookmarking?
If you’ve been wondering if you should get started in the world of social bookmarking, you might be surprised to learn that you’ve probably already participated in it at some point. If you’ve ever shared a site with a friend, you’ve technically been guilty of socially bookmarking a site. All the top bookmarking sites do is organize all of your sites of interest into one place. There are some clear signs that you should start your own account with a major social bookmarking site.
If your friends are always complimenting you on your ability to share really good sites, or the best articles, you should probably start your own account at Digg or StumbleUpon. You will probably develop a fast following of people that are hungry for finding the things that you are interested in. You’ll most likely discover new online friends that have similar interests and you can then take a look at their list of bookmarks to discover new things that you will end up liking.
Are you always the first to spot new trends or hot songs or websites? It is quite possible that you are what is known as a first or early adapter. You are the first to know if something will be a hit or not. If something strikes your fancy, chances are the masses will end up finding out about it weeks or months later. People love to follow the lead of an early adapter. Nobody wants to be the last to know about the hilarious video clip that is going viral. They will come to trust you as someone that knows what is happening at the moment.
If you want to promote a website, then social bookmarking is a good way to go. You’ll probably want to set up new account specifically for that purpose, or you risk the likelihood that you’ll annoy your friends with shameless plugs to your site. You’ll want to be choosy and not just go with every single bookmarking service available. Choose ones that you feel best compliment your website. Don’t submit it to a site that focuses mostly on science and technology if your website has nothing to do with that topic.
If you are just wanting to get involved with social bookmarking just because you’ve heard all the hype of it, you might want to take a pass. There are a ton of people already bookmarking sites left and right, and there’s not much point in jumping in now. If you don’t have a strong desire to cruise the net and find awesome sites on a regular basis then you’re profile will probably just sit idle. If no one is there to look at the sites that you bookmark, what’s the point of bookmarking it. If a tree falls in the forest, and no one adds it to Digg, does it make a sound?
