How is a Landing Page Different From a Web Page?
A landing page is, in fact, a type of web page, but it’s purpose is different than the pages of your website. When we think of a web page, we think of it as an information page within a small business website. A landing page, however, is not usually used to provide information.
What is a landing page?
First let’s start by defining what a landing page is and it’s function. It is a single web page that delivers a very clear message and has one specific call to action. This call to action might be to gather leads; in which case your focus would be to have your page visitor enter their email address in an opt-in form or fill our a quote request. Another call to action might be to sell one particular product. Yet another option would be to use the landing page as a means of driving traffic to your main site. You can summarise and draw attention to the main features of your website.
An effective landing page will only give your visitor one option. That being, whatever your call to action is. You do not put any other links on this page or provide further information about your business. That is what your web page is for. The only exception might be one link at the bottom of the page to your main website.
When would I use a landing page?
This page is generally used for a site or product promotion campaign. Whether you are using paid advertising or doing a social media blitz, you want to get the highest return on investment possible. By sending your traffic to a targeted page where their only option is to take your desired action, you will have a higher conversion rate. There are no distractions on this page that might lead your visitor off in another direction as there are in a normal web page.
Your web page, however, is your place of business online. On your web page, you will want to give as much information possible about your business, your product or service and your business ethics. You will want to interact with your clients and give them value on your website.
If you look at your web page as being your storefront, then a landing page is like an advertisement for your store, business or product. It’s only function is to bring you leads, sales, or website traffic. Nothing more, nothing less. One clear message and one clear action.
