Google SEO and Website Speed - Revisited

We recently wrote an article about how in the very near future, website speed will become a factor. We had quite a bit of feedback on this article so we are choosing to expand the topic. Most of you may think that website speed is purely determined by how fast your website hosting company computer are, this is only partly true. Most hosting companies provide both adequate bandwidth and more than sufficient computer horsepower behind their website hosting solutions.

The truth of the matter is that the features that each website hosting provider has enabled by default or will allow you to enable on the server have a bigger impact. For example, both Apache and IIS allow for compression, which can reduce the bandwidth required by up to 70%. In any environment, that large a drop in required file sizes and therefore bandwidth, will allow substantial increases in website page load speed. Look into it, chances are the feature can be enabled or an upgrade purchased for little to nothing.

Another common method of improving your website page loading speed is to make sure every image is properly compressed. Look around online you will find free image compression software for the taking or if you are lucky enough to have a copy of Adobe Photoshop, you can do the compression with that. This can lend to image size reductions upward of 80% depending on the quality you require.

I will take fast websites over really pretty ones most every time for the simple reason that most of us don’t have the time or patience to wait around too long for pages to load, and it reduces the emotional approach your visitors will have toward your website.
