You have probably heard marketers say how important it is to exchange links with other sites. Even some of the top SEO experts are saying you need to exchange a lot of links with other sites. Maybe at one time it worked, but I was doing it four years ago and it didn’t work for me even back then. I think it’s time to stop trying to fool the search engines, the algorithms they have now are just too sophisticated, so don’t waste your time

I will be the first to tell you, I don’t know the secrets the search engines keep from us, but I do know what works and doesn’t work for me and exchanging links hasn’t worked for me. There are a couple of other things I have tried in the past that didn’t work either. Placing a link on what is known as a link farm will do you no good at all. A link farm is a site that has nothing but hundreds of links on it and you are sharing the link juice with all the other links.

The search engines know what a link farm is, and you will probably be penalized just for placing a link on a site like that. Another thing you don’t want to do is have a backlink on a site that is not some how associated with your site. At one time this worked, but in the last three years or so the search engines have changed things a little and today I am able to move up the search engines much faster when my links come from a relevant site.

Of course we all know that it is better to have your keywords in your anchor text, it has been this way for years, but the search engines are smarter today so now I never use the same keyword in every link. I don’t know if I have to do this, but because search engines are so much smarter today it makes sense to me that they could figure out if the link is always the same that I am probably putting the link on that site myself and they want links that come from other people.

From where we started to where we are today there have been many changes in the way search engines do their job, so in the future we should be prepared for even more changes. What will this mean? I think it is going to force people to just do things to way they should be done. I think today is a good time to start, because sometime in the future you will have to conform to the rules and it would be better to start now and be profiting while others would have to start all over again.
