SEO Basics You Can Use Today For Higher Website Ranking
Every online business wants to optimize the performance of its website. This can include optimizing the layout to increase conversion rates from visitors so that there is an increase in sales without a corresponding need for additional traffic.
However, most online businesses recognize the need to try to improve their website’s performance by increasing the volume of traffic received by the website and this is usually achieved by using what is known as SEO or Search Engine Optimization to attempt to increase the website’s position or ranking in the results displayed by the search engines.
A good ranking in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) is achieved by good SEO. Good SEO usually requires attention to both on-page optimization and off-page optimization. Both of these play an important factor in the calculation of ranking position by the major search engines.
On-page optimization refers to factors that you can change on the pages of your website, and off-page optimization refers to factors that are external to your website. You will often find that it is easier to optimize your website’s on-page factors than it is to optimize your website’s off-page factors.
On-page Optimization
On-page optimization relates to changes to the content or text of your website, and the layout, design, or structure of the website.
On-page optimization factors would include:-
1. Optimization of the meta-tags of each page of your website - including title, description, and keywords.
2. Addition of Alt-tags containing keywords to images on your website.
3. Good internal linking of pages via navigation links that are accessible by search engine spiders, and use keywords as the link text.
4. Use of keywords in the names of the individual pages of your website.
5. Good html code that is free of errors and conforms to web standards.
6. Good quality content that is grammatically correct and free of spelling errors, and is as unique as possible.
7. Inclusion of keywords in the content of your pages, and additionally, the inclusion of related keywords to assist the website’s LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) score.
8. Avoidance of excess usage of keywords in content to keep keyword density at acceptable levels.
9. A good quality sitemap listing all the pages of your site, preferably in the XML format required by the search engines.
Off-page Optimization
Off-page optimization relates mainly to the links which point to your website from other websites and blogs on the internet, and the text that is used in those links.
Off-page optimization factors would include:-
1. Using keywords as “anchor text’ in any links pointing to your website.
2. Varying the keywords that are used as “anchor text” so that not every link contains exactly the same “anchor text”
3. Obtaining links from as wide a range of sites as possible.
4. Obtaining links from relevant websites which are high in page rank, and are considered “authority sites”.
Search Engine Optimization is a relatively straight-forward process and simple to do, although it can be quite time-consuming. The on-page optimization can be done relatively easily, but the off-page optimization requires a degree of effort and work.
To assist your off-page optimization efforts, you could utilize automated blogging software and automated article submission software to assist in obtaining backlinks to your website.
