Search Engine Optimisation - Do I Really Need It?
There’s a common misconception that search engine optimisation is just a luxury; something that only a select few use. In truth SEO is vital to the success of every website, helping to ensure online visibility and gaining valuable search traffic.
It has often been painted as a bit of a dark art, but search engine optimisation is very much the lifeblood of the Internet. Without it search engines wouldn’t have a clue where to rank anything, and when it comes to your online business, the less guesswork involved the better.
Some also charge that SEO simply elevates bad sites to a higher position than they could, or perhaps should be able to achieve without it. This is as irrelevant as it is erroneous. Google and the other search engines employ an incredibly sophisticated algorithmic team of web crawlers. These ’spiders’ will go through a site, evaluate the strength of it by way of a number of checks. Poor quality sites will find it difficult to rank regardless of their SEO; the days of black hat are long gone.
What search engine optimisation does provide is an even footing. If you’ve got a good site, offering great services you will be able to compete with the industry big boys with some careful planning and watertight SEO. Of course there are factors that you can’t change, domain age being one obvious example; however, with strong and targeted keywords along with a thorough implementation strategy, you can get your site to rocket up the rankings.
It’s not a simple process though. Optimisation is a slow and gradual process of building strength steadily. Too many people have in the past, and some even continue to do so today, to ‘game’ the system. Flooding websites with keywords, buying links from strong sites and numerous other underhanded techniques. Fortunately though, with the increases in search engine sophistication, these days are numbered.
Think of your website as a house building project. You can either use the right materials, take the time to create a solid blueprint and then put it all together brick by brick; or, you can just get bits and pieces here and there, put them all together and hope for the best. Whilst the first approach may take significantly more time, it offers more of a long-term benefit than the hotchpotch construction of the second.
Of course, there will be some who say “I’m top of Google, but I’ve never done any SEO”. The truth though is much different. Yes, a site could plausibly be top for one or two terms, but it’s unlikely that they’re ranking in all the areas they could be. Similarly, every site, no matter how bad, has some element of SEO. Keywords are often used organically, often without the writer even having the faintest clue that they’re there, that is part of search engine optimisation.
To get the very best performance from your site though it needs to be fully optimised throughout. Having the best home page will mean nothing if the rest of your site is barren and devoid of content throughout the rest of the navigation. Each page requires some level of optimisation to ensure that you are gaining maximum strength throughout. Of course it may be impractical to dedicate hours to each page, particularly if your site contains hundreds of individual sections; but there’s no reason why this can’t be your ultimate goal.
Don’t allow a lack of understanding of search engine optimisation undermine your site. Even if you don’t have the time or understanding yourself, you should have no issues finding an SEO Agency who can offer professional optimisation services should you wish to outsource. This is by no means a cheap option, but it could certainly prove to be money well spent.
