SEO MythBusters - Backlinks

Considering how heavily Google weighs backlinks in pagerank determinations, it’s no surprise that a myths about backlinks spread like wildfire across the Web. Some of these myths are downright false, while others are simply misinterpreted. Below you’ll learn which myths you should completely ignore - and which you should take to heart.

Myth #1: Backlinks Will Hurt You.

Status: Partially true.

It is true that backlinks from low page rank sites are not as valuable as backlinks from sites with high pagerank, but these links are unlikely to actually reduce your page rank. The exception to this rule is if the site is a known spam page or link farm. Otherwise, the link will still benefit you, just not as much as one from a site with higher page rank.

Myth #2: Keyword Density is Required to Rank for a Specific Term.

Status: FALSE!

A website does not need to have a specific keyword density to rank highly for that page. If this were the case, why would YouTube videos with no text on the page aside from tags rank highly for keywords? If a page has quality inbound links with the right anchor text, the page can rank in Google even without appropriate keyword density.

Myth #3: The Page Rank of the Specific Page Your Backlink is Posted On Matters.

Status: FALSE!

If a website’s home page has high pagerank, a link on any page within that domain will also be considered a quality backlink by Google. The page rank of the specific page the link is posted on is less important than the pagerank of the main page.
