Are You Paying Enough Attention to HEM?

With all the fuss about SEO and SEM, many websites overlook the most important thing in the process: the customer. Visitors to your page will not be impressed by your exceptional behind the scenes SEO work. They won’t know or care how many backlinks you have to your page or that your site is perfectly designed for SEO.

All of the SEM efforts in the world will not improve your site’s conversion rate if you are failing miserably in terms of Human Eye Optimization, also known as HEM.

While search engine spiders are looking at links and tags, your human visitors have more important things on their mind. They want to know:

• Does your site deliver the information/product/service they were looking for?
• Can they easily find what they need on the page?
• Can they navigate through your site without difficulty?
• Is your page easy to read?
• Is the site clean and organized or cluttered and hard to follow?

If your site doesn’t provide the information search engine users are looking for, visitors will leave. If your site contains the right information, but the visitor can’t find it because the site is hard to read or navigate through, guess what? The customer will leave. Climbing to the top of Google will only benefit you if the people who click on your page are pleased with what they find.

Don’t overlook your visitors’ needs in your quest to achieve higher page rank. Yes, you need Google to people find your page - but if people don’t like what they see they aren’t going to stay on your page long enough to benefit you anyway.
