SEO Defined
Search engine optimization is the foundation of most Internet marketing campaigns. Search engine optimization is the process of improving a website’s “organic” pagerank on the search engine results page (SERP), which is the page you land on after entering a query into a search box.
If you’ve ever studied a search engine results page, you’ll notice that there are two types of website listings. At the top and right hand sides of most SERPs you will see “sponsored listings.” These listings are pay per click advertisements purchased by the website owner. The other listings on the page are the “organic” or natural listings. These websites are selected and prioritized by the search engine’s algorithm because they have been determined to have a high “relevancy” to the search terms entered in the query box.
A website’s placement within the SERP is known as its pagerank (PR). The higher a website’s pagerank, the more traffic it will likely receive from the search engines. The ultimate goal of a website should be to rank within the top five for page rank for the most competitive search terms.
How Do I Improve My Page Rank?
SEO is the collection of practices designed to improve a website’s page rank in the search engines. Common SEO techniques include:
• Link building - gathering links from other websites to your website. Link building can be accomplished through:
o An article marketing campaign
o Social media, networking, and bookmarking
• Content creation - creating “pages” of valuable, informative, and keyword rich content to your website. The more pages a site has, the better.
• Behind the scenes SEO - optimizing your page’s design, HTML elements, and tags for increased page rank.
