Something About DMOZ (Open Source Directory Project)

Few weeks back, I came to read many articles and comments about DMOZ and its reputation in current search engine results. The comments and articles were shocking as all of them were reflecting same image about DMOZ; that now, it is a “waste of time”. Due to a lengthy submission procedure and lack of providing responses about whether the site has been submitted or rejected, DMOZ has loosen its value all by itself.

I am a new starter in the field of Search Engine Optimization and I have heard so much about the importance of submitting a website in DMOZ directory. But yet I personally think that the open directory project has to change its level of services. If search engines give more importance to DMOZ, than it is the sole liability of the editors of the open directory project to effectively fulfill their responsibility. Currently, a load of webmasters are referring DMOZ as a useless directory and they are moving forward for other web directories; where they find proper results.

Some suggestions : What DMOZ should consider

As DMOZ is still considered by search engines as one of the best human edited directory, it is important to improve and accelerate the procedure of website approval/refusal. It should also look forward to give importance to its clients/webmasters, who are investing their precious time in submitting hundreds of websites per day. Proper response should be given within adequate time period to all webmasters informing them about the progress of their submission. In this age of communication where barrier are not an issue, DMOZ should start a Ticketing System for webmasters to get the exact progress about their website submission.

Conclusion:

DMOZ is loosing its value day by day and if it wants to regain its value as in previous years, then it should look upon to facilitate its customers, rather than annoying them. DMOZ directory is no doubt, one of the best directory with hundreds of categories for website submission, but if a fruit is not in your hand, then its not yours…
